Showcasing his skills in the pre-event testing and the free practice sessions, Oliver finished in third place in the Qualifying which put him in P3 for the first race and P4 for the last race of the weekend.
He got off the line with superb pace and got the better of Lubin in turns 2-3 with a spectacular move on the British driver for P2. He then chased after Lomko and it didn’t take long to catch the Cryptotower Racing driver, in a wheel-to-wheel battle through turns 1-2-3, snatching the lead with 16 laps to go. He started to pull away immediately setting a soaring pace all the way to the checkered flag, crossing the line 10 seconds clear of his competition with a clean sweep of points for the win, fastest lap, and most positions gained.
This victory meant that he had to line up in P6 on the grid on Sunday morning due to the reverse grid, which put the young Dane in a difficult position on the old-school F1 track. He fired off the line and was up in P5 before the first corner and continued his charge on the track notoriously difficult for overtaking, claiming a strong fourth at the line.
Race 3 got off to a rocky start with three drivers stalling on the grid resulting in an early Safety Car, however, Oliver still managed to snatch P2 from Lubin before the race came to a halt. He nailed the restart, attempting to make a move on Mansell for the lead but couldn’t make his way past the Australian. His continuous attacks allowed the chasing pack to close up on him and Goethe came out third from the three-way battle for the lead, and that’s where he crossed the line, claiming his second podium on the weekend and twelfth of the season.
Oliver Goethe:
“It was probably my toughest weekends so far in Euroformula, but still came home with some silverware and a good haul of points for the championship. Saturday’s race was perfect. The car was mega and once I grabbed the lead, it was smooth sailing to the finish line. Saturday however was more tricky as the reverse grid starts did me no favours. I made the best out of Race 2 and even though we had the pace to win, had to settle for third in the last race which is a bit disappointing but overall we had a good weekend.”
With four more rounds to go from the 2022 season, Oliver now leads the championship with a 69-point advantage.
The Euroformula Open season continues with the first of the two Italian rounds in Imola on 3-4 September.
